Graduate school search engines helpful

I completed my degree in 2009 and have three years of work experience as a software engineer in the IT industry. My GMAT score is 660. I will be writing TOEFL in a few days. I am interested in doing an MIS (Management Information Systems) course in the U.S. Can you please let me know the list of the universities that offer this course or an equivalent and which accept a GMAT score for admission?

Shruthi

A good place for you to begin researching suitable universities for MIS programs would be www.petersons.com or www.gradschools.com, which are graduate school search engines. You can search for suitable programs by several parameters – subject (over 150 are listed for management information systems), highest degree offered, location, public/private institutions, and so on. For more detailed information on the process of planning, selecting, and applying to U.S. universities, you can visit www.usief.org.in/

With regards to standardised tests, the GMAT is generally required for graduate business programs, while the GRE is required for admission to all other graduate programs. Check the university websites to confirm which tests may be required.

I am a textile specialist, having 25 years of professional experience in textile spinning industry. I have invented a unique technology that I want to fine tune and improve. Is there any institution or university in the U.S. or in Canada, to continue my R and D?

The U.S. Exchange Visitor Program offers an opportunity that may be a good fit. Visit http://j1visa.state.gov and select “Specialist Program” to see if you meet the criteria. Specialists in this context are experts in a field of specialised knowledge or skills who provide opportunities to increase the exchange of ideas with American counterparts. The designated sponsors listed on the J-1 visa website may be able to assist you further.

I am a student aspiring to study in the U.S. I received admission to a U.S. university but when I applied for a visa I was rejected as a potential immigrant under 214(b). I didn’t have the opportunity to show any of my documents. I am a bona fide student and definitely not a potential immigrant as I have ties to my home country and don’t even have any relatives in the U.S. I am planning to reapply for the visa. Kindly give suggestions for my next interview and how to convince the officer that I am not a potential immigrant.

Sai Prashanth

We suggest that you reapply for the visa only if you think there is something new that you can add to your case to convince the visa officer. Visa officers often do not look at documents. Through an in person interview they determine whether an applicant is a genuine student, if the applicant can successfully finish an academic program, and if he or she can fund a U.S. university program. Having relatives in the U.S. is not the cause of rejection. Also, one rejection does not necessarily mean subsequent rejections so we suggest you reapply with more information about your school, program, and the kind of work you would pursue in India after you return home.

I am doing my final year in electronics and communication engineering. I have opted to go for higher studies rather than placements in 2013. I am quite confused about doing an MBA program abroad. First-year students are not encouraged. Can you suggest any top universities or business schools that accept first-year students for MBA programs?

Gowtham Vijay

Gaining admission to an MBA program without work experience is possible, but more challenging. Although some MBA programs do look at candidates without work experience (such as Harvard Business School), the majority of business schools like to see candidates with at least two years of work experience. Unless you have a compelling reason to go to business school now, you might consider waiting to apply until you have three to four years of work experience. As a general rule, graduate admission committees review applications holistically – GMAT/GRE scores, work experience, application essays and letters of recommendation all play an important role in the decision-making process. I am pursuing my bachelor’s in food technology and wish to pursue higher studies at a U.S. university. Kindly guide me to the right university in the U.S. for higher studies in this area. How should I prepare to receive admission into a U.S. university?

Nikitha

GradSchools.com lists over 200 accredited U.S. universities offering graduate programs in food sciences and nutrition. Research your options to see if any of these programs may be a good fit for you. If you decide to apply, you will need to prepare for a holistic application process. A typical application will have many components – your academic record, standardized test scores, letters of recommendations, and research/work experience, to name a few. Each of these is factored into the admissions decision. You should aim to score as high as possible on the GRE, as it will enhance your student profile and chances of receiving financial assistance. I am in my final year of aeronautical engineering with 87 percent marks. I want to know about postgraduate study in aerospace engineering in the U.S. or other foreign countries. Will they provide any scholarships to international students? If so, on what basis do they provide scholarships? Some universities give pilot training courses with postgraduate study. Can you please tell me about such universities?

I am in my fourth year of mechanical engineering. I want to know about the procedure to apply for master’s degree in aerospace engineering. How much will it cost to finish the degree? Which exams should I take to qualify for a degree program in the U.S?

D.Thirukumaran

To pursue a master’s program in the U.S., the GRE and TOEFL/IELTS are generally required. Some universities may require you to take GRE Subject Tests as well. Given the opportunity for financial aid, graduate education costs vary from university to university and individual to individual. Can you please let me know if OPT is applicable to an MBA course? Can a student work in the U.S. after finishing his MBA?

MBA candidates pursuing a full degree in the U.S. can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) once they graduate. This option allows graduates to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months after finishing their program, as long as they remain in status on their student visa. If you are presently studying in the U.S., consult your international student adviser at your university about OPT opportunities in the United States.
